Former England captain Wayne Rooney is arrested on suspicion of drink driving

Former England captain Wayne Rooney has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving near his £6million home in Cheshire, English media report.

Rooney, England's all-time record goal scorer, was stopped by police on Thursday night after he had been on an evening out.

Rooney has retired from international football and is not with the England squad that will play against Malta this evening.

The 31-year-old striker is believed to have been taken to a local police station in Cheshire where he was quizzed by officers.

Rooney has lived in Cheshire for the past 12 years, in a mansion in Prestbury, not far from the Everton training ground at Finch Farm.

Rooney announced his retirement from international football last week after scoring 53 goals in 119 caps for England.

Since his return to Everton, Rooney has scored two goals in three games and played in his side's 2-0 defeat away at Chelsea on Sunday.
