Works to renovate the basketball pavilion in Ta' Qali have entered the final phase, the Parliamentary Secretary for Youth and Sport, Clifton Grima, announced this week.
The €500,000 project is being financed by SportMalta.
The pavilion was originally built in the 1940s. Only the outer metal structure has been retained, but a new roof has been added and the metal panels have been replaced.
The first phase of the project involved the replacement of the actual hangar while the second phase will involve the construction of a larger stand and works on ancillary facilities.
The wooden flooring will be retained since this was recently replaced after the facility had been damaged by rainwater.
Works started in May and are expected to be completed by November.
Parliamentary Secretary Grima said the government was continuously investing in sport, which was an important factor in improving the quality of life of youngsters.
The government, ha said, has launched a consultation exercise on protecting integrity in Maltese sports. He also noted that works on a new football pitch in Marsascala have started. The project will cost some €2.2 million.
Furthermore, works on the Lotta Facility in Naxxar are in an advanced stage and preparations are being made for the start of works on the shooting range in Ta' Kandja.
Work on the Imtaħleb Hill Climb will start in the coming days.
