Police file bribery charges against former FTS official, reports say

Police have filed bribery charges against a former Foundation for Tomorrow's Schools official Edward Caruana.

Caruana was also a known canvasser for Education Minister Evarist Bartolo. Reports say that charges were filed in the court registry some days ago, meaning at Caruana was not charged under arrest, but police chose to commence proceedings via a court summons.

Magistrate Joe Mifsud is said to have abstained from hearing the case, meaning that another magistrate will have to be assigned.

Charges levelled against Caruana include taking bribes while employed as a public official, using his authority and falsifying documents.

In December 2016, former FTS boss Philip Rizzo flagged abuse, and quit his job due to, what he claims, as a failure to act by Minister Bartolo despite being made aware of the situation.

A Gozitan contractor had claimed that Caruana requested €30,000 for works on a sixth form in Victoria.
