EP delegation: Latest draft agenda shows MEPs set to meet PM, Owen Bonnici, police, FIAU

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Justice Minister Owen Bonnici seem to have accepted an invitation by MEPs who will be in Malta tomorrow to investigate the rule of law in Malta.

According to the latest draft, which is not the final version, a number of people have already accepted.

The European Parliament delegation includes members of the committee investigating money laundering, tax avoidance and tax evasion known as PANA, members of the civil liberties committee and others from justice and home affairs committee.

The delegation will arrive on Wednesday to follow up on a debate on the rule of law in Malta held in the European Parliament a few weeks ago.

This is the second time MEPs are visiting Malta since the release of the Panama Papers. The first time round, MEPs had met a number of persons including deceased journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Daphne Caruana Galizia's sons, Matthew, Andrew and Paul, met with the PANA committee in Brussels on Wednesday.

Among those who, according to the draft agenda, have accepted to meet the EP delegation are Attorney General Peter Grech, along with Deputy Chairman of the FIAU's Board of Governors Anton Bartolo, FIAU Director Kenneth Farrugia, Deputy Director of the FIAU Alfred Zammit and Head of the FIAU's legal and international relations section Alexander Mangion.

Others who have also accepted, according to the draft are Police Commissioner Lawrence Cutajar, along with Deputy Commissioner in charge of the Crimes Investigation Department Silvio Valletta, Deputy Commissioner in Charge of the Police Legal Office Antoine Casha, Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Economical Crimes and Money Laundering Units Ian Abdilla and police consultant Andrew Seychell.

Former FIAU investigator Jonathan Ferris also seems ready to meet the members, and a meeting is also scheduled with members of the MFSA and well as with members of civil society and journalists.

Those who still have "to be confirmed" include Nexia BT representatives, the Chief Justice and Keith Schembri.

Both Nexia BT and Keith Schembri had not met with the PANA committee when they had visited Malta after the Panama Papers were released.

It is unclear whether Pilatus Bank have accepted to meet with the EP delegation.
