Partit Demokratiku has been accepted as a full member of ALDE at its 38th congress, the party said in a statement.
A delegation of 6 executive party members led by leader Anthony Buttigieg is participating in this three-day ALDE congress in Amsterdam.
This morning, MP Marlene Farrugia delivered a maiden speech on behalf of Partit Demokratiku. She stated that the Partit Demokratiku's mission is to encourage every individual person to reach their full potential. For that full potential to be reached, individuals need to live in a meritocratic political climate where the rule of law and good governance are supreme.
ALDE is the natural fit for the Partit Demokratiku as it emphasizes the rights of the citizen before the power of the state, as well as the obligations and responsibilities citizens have to one another. Partit Demokratiku's duty in Opposition is to put the interests of the public good and the interests of the citizens of Malta above partisan politics.
Through its membership of ALDE, Partit Demokratiku emphasizes the importance of devolving power back to the institutions so as to make them truly autonomous and independent. Power must also be given back to the people, to whom politicians must become more transparent and accountable.
Through a meritocratic system, people's independence will be restored. Malta's best resources are its human resources and Partit Demokratiku believes in the people of Malta and their potential once they are able to air their views freely.
Executive members are participating in various workshops and will be voting on resolutions presented in this congress. The delegation also includes the Godfrey Farrugia, Timothy Alden, Lee Bugeja Bartolo and Rosa Borg.
