Assistant Police Commissioner does not exclude that PEP was behind Daphne Caruana Galizia murder

Assistant Police Commissioner Silvio Valletta did not exclude the possibility of a PEP being behind the assassination of the late journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia while testifying in court.

Valletta spoke during the Constitutional case filed by the Caruana Galizias against him, the Attorney General and the Police Commissioner. The Caruana Galizia family are requesting that Valletta be removed from the investigation, arguing that he has a conflict of interest given that his wife is the Minister for Gozo, and given his role on the FIAU Board.

Valletta told the court that this was not his first murder investigation, and that the inspectors in charge of the compilation of evidence against three persons currently charged with the murder, and the ongoing investigation, are Keith Arnaud and Kurt Zahra.

He also noted that a magisterial inquiry is underway, and that the magistrate handling the inquiry has regular contact with the Caruana Galizia family.

During cross examination by lawyer Jason Azzopardi, Valletta admitted that he knows he is a PEP. Asked how many past victims of homicides he was involved in investigating had written about him or his family, he said none, but that some had threatened him.
