Woman found guilty of perjury over false claims of child abuse

A 35-year-old woman today received a suspended sentence and a 10-year general interdiction for falsely claiming that her son's grandfather had struck the boy's exposed genitals with an iron rod.

In a case against the grandfather, Rita Grech,35 had claimed that she was visiting the boy when he claimed he had been assaulted by his grandfather. The boy, she had claimed, had pulled down his trousers, revealing a bruise.

Grech had told the court that this happened in front of two social workers from Agenzija Appogg.

But the social workers gave a different account, denying that the child had taken off his clothes. They said the boy had merely pulled up his shirt, revealing his stomach.

Borg was subsequently charged with perjury.

Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech, presiding over the case, found that the woman's version been contradicted by the two eye witnesses. The court added that the accused "could not be believed, as she should not have been believed on 8 May 2013. Without a doubt, her testimony is untrue."

The court, noting that the woman had a criminal record, declared her guilty of having given false testimony. Borg was handed a one-year jail term, which was suspended for two years, and a a 10-year general interdiction.

Inspector Priscilla Caruana Lee prosecuted.
