BirdLife Malta want the country to spend another €6 million in a referendum to decide on a subject that was closed in 2015 when the people voted to keep spring hunting, the Federation of Hunters and Conservationists said today.
In a statement, the FKNK said instead the government should consider a petition signed by 104,000 people for an amendment to the referenda act.
It is clear that BirdLife want a total abolition of hunting, in spite of the fact that the government negotiated to retain it in pre-EU accession talks. Court action by BirdLife was rejected, and the people in their majority voyted to retain spring hunting – and yet BirdLife continues to insist on this subject, FKNK said.
