Employed persons at risk of poverty low in Malta when compared to other EU countries

A recent report published by the European Union statistics body Eurostat shows that inwork, at risk of poverty in Malta is low when compared to other EU countries. The data collected was from 2016.

According to the research, 5.8 percent of employed persons aged 18 and over, in Malta were at-risk-of poverty, 3.8 per cent below EU average, and placing eighth with the lowest percentage.

The report, titled In-work poverty in the EU, described persons at risk of poverty as individuals "living in a household with an equivalised disposable income below the risk-of-poverty threshold. This threshold is set at 60% of the national median equivalised disposable income (after social transfers)."

More males than females were employed and at risk of poverty. 7.5 per cent of males and 3.1 per cent of females contributed to the final figure.

In 2016, the rate of employed persons at risk of poverty was highest in Romania (18.9 per cent), followed by Greece (14.1 per cent), Spain (13.1 per cent) and Luxembourg (12.0 per cent).
