An article published by the British current affairs and political magazine New Statesman depicts Malta as a country where "lies are routine currency" and where "there are clearly risks in probing too deep".
The article was written by Matthew Engel, who says that he returned to Malta recently after a 40-year absence to find a country where "every day the lively bilingual local papers splash stories about corruption that don't concern football kits or clarinets".
Entitled "Malta: an island of secrets and lies", Engel writes about the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, the opening of Panama companies by Minister Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri, and police incompetence.
