‘Nobody shouts at the boy’ – MUT reveals details of grandma’s attack on headmistress

The Malta Union of Teachers today revealed details of the incident which led the police to press charges against a grandma who attacked a headmistress earlier this week, saying that it was doing so now that the court case has been settled.

In a statement, the MUT said the details were being released with the approval of the headmistress, Lorna Schembri.

The MUT said that at 10am, Schembri was on the telephone in her office when she saw a person waiting outside. Schembri instructed the assistant head to find out what she wanted. The woman entered the office, saying she was the grandmother of a student (she gave the name). "Nobody shouts at the boy", the woman said, and without waiting for an answer, she pulled the headmistress's hair and threw her to the floor. While still holding her by the hair, the woman started to punch and kick the headmistress.

A member of the school management and the school handyman intervened to stop the aggressor, who was escorted out of the school. The police were called for assistance and an ambulance was called to take the headmistress to hospital because of pain and injuries.

Schembri was released from hospital later in the date after tests were carried out and treatment given. She told the union that she does not know the person who attacked her, and that she and other educators always took care of the child in question. As such, she cannot understand what led to the attack.

Schembri thanked all those who offered her support.

The union said that this case showed that the authorities should not take school security lightly.

On Wednesday, the woman, aged 47, was handed a suspended sentence and fined
