Nationalist Party Spokesperson for Planning Marthese Portelli this evening emphasised that the CEO of the Lands Authority "needs to be the CEO of the people, not the CEO of the prime minister."
Speaking in parliament, Portelli was referring to the news report by Malta Today which claimed that former Labour Party CEO and current chairman of Transport Malta, James Piscopo, is set to be named Lands Authority CEO.
Piscopo, known to be a close friend of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, is to take over what is considered to be one of the most difficult entities to reform.
"Unfortunately, we see such things happening in other situations," said Portelli. "The CEO of the Lands Authority, like any other CEO, needs to be the people's CEO and not the Prime Minister's CEO."
During Portelli's speech, Infrastructure minister Ian Borg interjected that the post is open for any who wants to apply for the position. Following this, Portelli appealed for anyone interested to apply.
Pointing to the Labour Party's 2013 electoral manifesto, Portelli highlighted the pledge for parliamentary scrutiny in all positions of authority.
Until last week, Planning Authority CEO Johann Buttigieg was being touted for the post, but speaking in Parliament last Monday, Transport Minister Ian Borg had categorically denied that Buttigieg will be leaving the PA.
A public call for applications for the post of CEO at Lands Authority will be issued in the near future, following the resignation of Carlo Mifsud to run a new authority to be set up within the Transport Ministry.
