Design of Valletta market stalls being reconsidered

The design for the market stalls in Valletta is being taken "into consideration", with the government set to launch a white paper concerning open markets in Malta, Economy Minister Chris Cardona revealed in Parliament.

Cardona, who was replying to a parliamentary question put forward by PN MP Jason Azzopardi, revealed that the paper was due to be published saying it was at its 'conclusive stages'.

On further questioning, Cardona said that the government had consulted with all major stakeholders on the issue, namely local councils, residents, traders, and consumers.

He also stressed that the importance of the public consultation that will occur once the white paper is launched, also saying that the reform is necessary given that the industry is a different dimension from what it was 50 years ago.

Cardona added that the government is doing its best to ensure tradition lives on.

The initial design of the stalls in Valletta was scrapped after it brought significant criticism from the public, including Valletta Mayor Alexei Dingli and V18 Chairman Jason Micallef, with an agreement for a new design awarded to architects Ray Said and Rupert Pace failing to materialise.
