Shoddy Coast Road bus stop works exposing pedestrians to danger, PN Whip tells minister

PN Whip Robert Cutajar has blasted Transport Minister Ian Borg over Coast Road bus stop renovation projects that are exposing pedestrians to danger.

Cutajar presented the photos above and below in a parliamentary question he addressed to the transport and infrastructure minister. He noted that rubble, construction material, chains and heavy machinery had been left on the bus stops for over ten days, creating a danger for pedestrians.

Replying, Minister Borg said that works were being carried out in several parts of the Coast Road to install new bus shelters. These were "works in progress" he said, indicating that two of the pictures showed the same bus stop during different phases of the project.

Borg said that while this type of work was bound to create inconveniences, from the photos presented by Cutajar it is clear that "there is adequate space for people making use of these bus stops."

The contractor has been told to ensure that the sites do not pose a danger to those making use of the pavements, Borg said.

In comments to this newsroom, Cutajar said the minister should stop insulting people's intelligence.

He said the photos show the real situation and, unlike what the minister is saying, there is not enough space for people using the bus stop or the pavement.

He said that fact that the works were still in progress is no excuse for exposing people to danger.

Cutajar described the situation as "obscene."
