Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has described Malta as the land of opportunity for blockchain, while addressing Malta's Blockchain Summit.
He said that Malta is moving forward at a fast pace, and that the country is trying to be at the forefront of the 4th industrial revolution.
"The blockchain seed landed on fertile soil here. We began watering it to ensure it grows in an organic way, building the blocks to ensure that it will bear fruit when the time is right."
"We took a decision, and have become the centre of such an important discussion on important technology."
He spoke about Malta's recent budget proposals, and said that the economy grew by an average of 6% per year, and that Malta's GDP growth is the largest of any EU state. "I still believe there is a sea of opportunity waiting for us."
He spoke about crypto currencies, and said whether they lead to less dependency of banknotes is still difficult to predict.
He said that this leads to discussions on new ways as to how one can move away from the conservative institutions which govern the world. "I find it fascinating that we are having this conversation when politics is surrounded by people who want to build walls, yet we are discussing a technology that wants to tear down walls."
"We are telling everyone that we are open for business, within the parameters we designed with all stakeholders. Our playingfield is designed and we are inviting people to come and play in our fields."
The applications of this technology is unlimited, from healthcare to banks, to the environment to financial services. The sky is the limit as long as rules are observed. That is why we got our reputation as the blockchain island."
"Our vision is to see this sector grow in volume and find new ways in how tech can improve people's lives."
"We are not done yet, of course not. What's next is the question we ask every day. Like every company we can only find opportunities if we are out there on the lookout."
"It is true Sophia will address the blockchain summit. Will there be a time where humans will be invited to speak at a conference organised by robots? Will we build machines that will lead to our own extinction? I believe we are more intelligent than that."
"I want Malta to be a hub for AI innovation and new intelligent tech and their regulations."
"We like to do things the right way in clear and sensible parameters, not rushing through. Our philosophy is to be honest brokers."
