Archbishop Charles Scicluna and Gozo Bishop Mario Grech today called for concrete solutions to the migration phenomenon in the Mediterranean.
The recent happenings, with migrants on board NGO vessels being refused entry into several ports including Malta, are of serious concern. Europe is closing its doors, rather than opening them, to being risking their lives at sea.
While recognising the efforts made by the Armed Forces of Malta to rescue a mother and her newly-born child, the bishops said that Malta should promote international solidarity.
What is the point of celebrating the birth of a child while others are drowning, the bishops said.
They said people who take the risk to cross over from Africa to Europe are doing so to escape from places where the human dignity is not respected, and from torture and slavery.
While understanding the complexities of the issue, the bishops called for courageous solutions that are always in favour of protective life.
