
Malta's national basketball team won the 2016 FIBA Small Countries Women's European Championship today after beating Ireland 67-59 in the final. Ireland started strongly and were ahead 27-19 at the end of the first quarter. But Malta gradually got into the game and clawed back the deficit. They trailed the Irish with 7 minutes remaining on the clock but rallied strongly to win and take home the gold medal. The Irish basketball federation was sporting in defeat, saying Malta had been "excellent" and congratulating them on the win. The final win comes after Malta routed Moldova 90-30 in the semifinal and beat both Andorra and Gibraltar at the group stages.
