A Catering student who stole an iPad from a parked car was given a second chance by the courts, given a three-year conditional discharge.
Victor Lucien Naessens, from Belgium, pleaded guilty to aggravated theft.
He was on holiday in Malta when he stole the iPad from the Citroen on 7 December, in St Julian's.
Magistrate Joseph Mifsud took note of the accused's cooperation with the police officers, and also took not that he returned the iPad to its owner.
Punishment should reform the wrongdoer to protect society, but should also serve as a deterrent, the magistrate noted.
The accused had a clean criminal record up to this point.
Inspector Nikolai Sant prosecuted.
