Two Georgian tourists were charged with attempting to export shotgun ammunition without permission told the courts that they were misled by a Maltese gun shop.
Inspector Louise Calleja told the court, presided over by Magistrate Monica Vella, that the university students, both in their 20s, were charged with breaching the Arms Act.
The ammunition was spotted in the airport x-ray machine, inside the man's bag, and his female companion told the police that she also had ammunition.
The Defence said the two bought the ammunition boxes and placed them in their hold luggage, as they were informed by the shopkeeper that they can carry two ammunition boxes.
Inspector Calleja informed the courts that, while the tourists were still given bad information, they were not in possession of a license to export the ammunition and thus had to be arrested.
The defence said that their reason for purchasing the ammunition here was that it was cheaper and of good quality.
Both pleaded guilty, and were granted bail against a €5,000 personal guarantee.
