Man serving suspended sentence denied bail on charges of aggravated possession

An Eritrean man, who is serving a suspended sentence on assault offences, has been denied bail by a magistrate after he was charged aggravated possession of cannabis resin.

Inspector Justine Grech, who was representing the prosecution, told the court that Yemane Teklom Zerislase, aged 26 and resides in a garage in Rabat, was found to be in possession of 13 pieces of suspected cannabis resin, which weighed approximately 12 grammes.

Zerislase, who has pleaded not guilty, had previously been handed a two year prison sentence that was suspended for four years after he admitted his guilt to charges related to the assault of a woman in Paceville, were he stole her handbag which contained a €300 mobile phone.

Due to the accused's previous sentence and the nature of the crime the court, which was presided over by Magistrate Charmaine Galea, denied Zerislase's request for bail.
