Total guests and nights spent in collective accommodation establishments during September 2017 advanced by 12.5 per cent and 7.6 per cent respectively when compared to the corresponding month in 2016, the NSO said today.
In September, total guests in collective accommodation establishments numbered 177,361, while total nights spent amounted to 957,765. The 3-star hotel category registered the largest increase in total nights spent. On the other hand, the largest share of guest nights was reported in 4-star hotels, accounting for 448,201 nights, or 46.8 per cent of the total.
The average length of stay in collective accommodation establishments went down to 5.4 nights in September 2017 from the average of 5.6 nights registered during the same month of 2016. The net use of bed-places stood at 75.6 per cent, up by 3.2 percentage points when compared to the corresponding month last year.
On a national level, there were 188 active collective accommodation establishments during September 2017, with a net capacity of 18,677 bedrooms and 42,306 bed-places.
Regional breakdown
Total guests in Malta region numbered 166,328, up by 12.3 per cent over September 2016. Additionally, an increase of 7.4 per cent was recorded in the number of nights spent. Total guests and nights spent in Gozo and Comino region increased by 16.1 per cent and 11.8 per cent when compared to the comparative month last year, to 11,033 and 43,116 respectively.
In Malta region, the average length of stay went down by 0.2 of a night to 5.5, and that in Gozo and Comino region decreased by 0.2 of a night to 3.9, when compared with the same month last year.
The net occupancy rate in Malta region increased by 3.2 percentage points, reaching 76.1 per cent, and that in Gozo and Comino region increased by 4.0 percentage points to 66.4 per cent over the same month of 2016.
January-September
Total guests in the first nine months of 2017 amounted to 1,396,190, an increase of 13.4 per cent over the same period in 2016. Total nights spent went up by 6.4 per cent, surpassing 7.4 million. The net use of bed-places advanced by 2.2 percentage points to 68.2 per cent.
