Proposed karting track application on Triq Hal Far renewed

A planning application to construct a karting track on Triq Hal-Far, limits of Birzebbugia, has been renewed.

The original application was filed back in 2007, and was to see a permanent karting circuit, club ancillary facilities, open air public grand stand, toilets, bar, meeting rooms and first aid facilities constructed on ODZ land.

The 2007 proposal includes an 8m wide racing track and 29 parking spaces.

The case officer's report for the 2007 application explained that "the site was located within the approved South Malta Local Plan which designates the site as an area for sports activities. The site has a triangular configuration and an area of approximately 2100m²."

"A strip of land to the north of the site is also designated for sports use and is presently being utilised for dragster racing."

The amenity building would accommodate a briefing room, kitchen, store and restaurant at ground floor with the restaurant continuing at first floor. A meeting room, bar and games room are proposed at first floor. The building and seating area would be located along the existing road and serve as a main entrance and landmark to the racing circuit.

The proposal would have seen the construction of a garage which was to be used for the servicing of carts during the race. The garage would be accessed by the 'pits lane' and faces onto the 'pits' area. This garage would have had an area of 120m² and a maximum height of 4.4m. The application had included details of safety barriers and track materials.

The case officer had recommended that the 2007 application be granted, noting that the proposal takes an active role in regenerating the vacant site and consolidating the area for recreation and should therefore be considered favourably from a planning and environmental point of view.

The applicant however had not completed the project, and thus a renewal application has been filed. Whether there will be any changes to the original proposal is not yet known.
