The Egrant magisterial inquiry cost more than €1.2 million, making it the most expensive in the local judicial history, Maltatoday reports today.
The inquiry took 15 months to complete, and was carried out by Magistrate Aaron Bugeja.
By 24 July, the expenses paid for the inquiry totalled €1,257,759, the report quotes the directorate general of the courts as saying.
The magistrate was asked to investigate claims made by Daphne Caruana Galizia that a company named Egrant that was opened in Panama belonged to the Prime Minister's wife Michelle Muscat. The inquiry did not find any evidence to sustain the allegation.
The magistrate was given full and unrestrained access to funds as deemed necessary, the report says. No records exist on the cost of individual inquiries, but Maltatoday quotes sources saying the Egrant inquiry was the "most expensive ever".
