Malta has acceded to the United Nations Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products

Malta has acceded to the United Nations Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products to join other member states when the protocol enters into force on 25 September 2018.

Malta will benefit from increased international cooperation to fight tobacco smuggling and better control the legal tobacco trade.

The objective of the protocol is the elimination of all forms of illicit trade in tobacco products including smuggling, illicit manufacturing, and counterfeiting by securing the supply chain of tobacco products.

"Acceding to this protocol is part of the overall work to protect the population from the harmful effects of tobacco. Through a collaboration between the Ministry for Health and the Customs Department, actions are underway to address means of countering illicit trade in tobacco products as key aspect of a comprehensive tobacco control policy with the ultimate aim to protect public health," a statement by the Health Ministry read.
