Milk producer Benna blamed a shortage of milk on the fact that cows "naturally produce less milk" in the hotter months.
"In the past few weeks, the supply of raw milk was not meeting the demand," the company admitted, also mentioning an increase in population as a factor that led to a shortage.
There has been an increase in demand for local fresh milk and fresh milk products, the company said.
Benna uses only 100% fresh Maltese milk, and does not use imported milk or milk alternatives. This shortage cannot be addressed by the importation of milk or other milk alternatives from abroad, it said.
The company is working on a "strategic long-term plan" to enable it to meet the increased demands throughout the whole year.
The shortage would be addressed in a few weeks once the temperature starts to cooling down again, a spokesman said.
