Schoolchildren should be given fresh, locally produced fruit and vegetables - PN

The Nationalist Party insisted on Thursday that schoolchildren should be given locally sourced fresh fruit, instead of foreign products that are already turning sour by the time they are distributed.

The PN was reacting to complaints by parents about low quality fruit given to schoolchildren. They say that, instead of promoting healthier eating, the less-than-apetising fruit and veg is having the opposite effect.

PN Secretary General Clyde Puli, who is also the party spokesman on education, said the Labour government had initially dragged its feet on re-introducing the fruit and veg scheme, which had originally been introduced by a PN government.

The government had ignored recommendations to use local produce, which had also had a negative impact on Maltese farmers. Another result was that the fruit and vegetables being given to students were not fresh, and they are being distributed in plastic containers that cannot be recycled.

All this showed that the government lacked planning and vision and did not want to invest in students. This was also the case with the free school transport system, Puli said.
