Full-time employment up nearly 6% in September – NSO

In September 2018, registered full-time employment increased by 5.9 per cent while part-time employment as a primary job increased by 0.6 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2017, the NSO said today.

Administrative data provided by Jobsplus show that, over a period of one year, the labour supply (excluding part-timers) in September increased by 5.5 per cent, reaching 209,475. This was mainly attributed to a year on year increase in the full-time registered employment (11,623) and a decline in registered unemployment (659).

Registered full-time employment

When September 2018 is compared to September 2017, the highest increase in employment was brought about by professional, scientifi c and technical activities and administrative and support service activities, with 1,795 and 1,447 respectively. Registered fulltime employment in the private sector went up by 10,388 persons to 160,178. Public sector full-time employment increased by 1,235 persons to 47,484.

The number of persons registered as full-time self-employed rose by 1,350 when compared to September 2017, while the number of persons registered as employees increased by 10,273. Fulltime employment for males and females went up by 5.0 per cent and 7.5 per cent respectively over 2017 levels.

Registered part-time employment

Registered part-time employment in September 2018 went up by 4.1 per cent when compared to a year earlier. The overall increase was mainly generated by professional, scientifi c and technical activitiesand arts, entertainment and recreation. On the other hand, administrative and support services activities registered a drop of 186 when compared to September 2017.

The number of part-timers who also held a full-time job amounted to 27,870 up by 8.9 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2017. Employed persons whose part-time job was their primary occupation totalled 35,226, up by 0.6 per cent  when compared to 2017.
