Funds disbursed by the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation increased by 54% in 2018

The Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation (MCCFF) disbursed a total of €11.85 million during 2018, helping more than 16,000 people.

Presenting the results during the annual general meeting on Thursday, President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca said the funds disbursed by the MCCFF had increased by 54% over the previous year.

She spoke of the generosity shown by the Maltese people, pointing out that donations to the foundation had increased by €1,023,000 over 2017.

She thanked all those who contributed, saying that the money raised gave a ray of hope to many people going through difficult times. She also thanked the members of the supervisory council, the board of administrators and all the volunteers.

The foundation increased its financial assistance to people with disabilities and patients requiring specialised care by over 72%, she said.

Medical assistance for Maltese families increased to €8.5 million, up from €4.4 million in 2017. The unit assisting disabled people disbursed €672,000, up from €560,000 the previous year.

Assistance for specialised chemotherapy, medicines for severe chronic diseases and assistance for overseas medical care amounted to €9.7 million, an increase of 73% over the previous year.

Individuals and other institutions received €2 million in assistance, an increase of 3.5% over 2017.

The chairman of the board of administrators, John Camilleri, said that the Medical Assistance Unit approved around 1,300 applications, the majority of which were for the 39 different types of specialised chemotherapy. The foundation paid for over 250 flight tickets and 1,700 accommodation nights related to overseas care. The unit also provided 186 wigs, made from natural hair, to chemotherapy patients.

The social assistance unit helped 3,500 families while the disabled persons assistance unit approved 618 applications.

During the year under review, the Foundation reported a deficit of €1,168,281.
