The Speaker of the House of Representatives on Wednesday turned down a request made by the Opposition for the motion of no confidence in Minister Konrad Mizzi, presented by independent MP Marlene Farrugia, to be discussed in Parliament on Thursday (today).
The proposal was submitted by Opposition Whip David Agius who argued that the Opposition had the option of requesting extra parliamentary sittings on Thursday to discuss issues put forward by the Opposition. As an independent MP, Marlene Farrugia now forms part of the Opposition.
The Speaker, Anglu Farrugia, said that Thursday sittings are shared by the government and the Opposition, and since the last time a sitting was held on Thursday it was to discuss matters submitted by the Opposition, it was the government's turn to use up a Thursday sitting.
Mr Agius argued that since the government had not taken up the option, and since nine weeks had passed since the last sitting on a Thursday, the Opposition had every right to request that a sitting takes place on Thursday (today).
The Speaker however denied the request and suggested that a House Business Committee meeting is held in the shortest time possible to discuss parliament's agenda, including the date when Dr Farrugia's motion is to be debated.
