Italy stun Spain 2-0 to reach Euro 2016 quarterfinals

Goals by Giorgio Chiellini and Graziano Pelle ensured Italy shocked holders Spain 2-0 and progressed to the Euro 2016 quarterfinals this evening.  Antonio Conte's men put in an aggressive performance that surprised Vicente del Bosque's team from the outset, and it took a standout performance by Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea to keep Spain in the game until the end.  Chiellini tucked home the rebound from an Eder freekick that de Gea had stopped but not held in the 33rd minute, while Pelle finished off a clinical counter-attack in injury time to ensure the Azzurri made it through to the next round.  Spain were seeking to win the European Championship for a record third time in a row, having won both the 2008 and 2012 editions. Chiellini's strike was the first goal Spain conceded in a knockout match at a European Championship or World Cup since Zinedine Zidane scored for France at the 2006 World Cup. Italy will now play world champions Germany in the quarterfinals.  Full match report to follow.
