St Julian’s is the mobile phone theft capital, information tabled in Parliament shows

St Julian's is the mobile phone theft capital, according to information tabled in Parliament.

Replying to a parliamentary question by PL MP Luciano Busuttil, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela said 17,993 mobile phones were stolen between 2008 and August of this year.

St Julian's, which includes Paceville, tops the list with 8,619 phones having been stolen during that period.

Sliema came in second with 1,579 and St Paul's Bay took third place with 1,183.

The peaceful villages of Gharb and Ghasri in Gozo had the lowest number of mobile phone thefts – one case in each locality. Only two mobile phones were reported stolen in Fontana during the 8 and a half year period.

Mr Abela also revealed that during the same period 425 people had been charged with mobile phone theft offences.
