Police union chief 'disgusted' after teen accused of attempted murder of officer granted bail

Police union chief Sandro Camilleri expressed his disgust after a young man accused of attempting to murder a police officer was granted bail on Friday.

He was commenting on Facebook after Liam Debono, the underage motorist who ran over and maimed a police officer conducting a routine traffic stop, was released on bail by the Criminal Court.

Writing on Facebook, Camilleri, president of the Police Officers Union, said that he had received many phone calls and messages after "the obscenity". Using strong words and a high dose of sarcasm, he said that the police are considered to be the rubbish of society and youngsters who think of becoming officers are throwing their lives away.

"Everybody is innocent until proven guilty," he goes on, but the seriousness of the case and how the facts developed should have been taken into consideration.

Camilleri said he hoped the Attorney General will appeal to court's decision.

"Continue to beat us and hurt us because that's what we deserve," Camilleri concluded.
