Simon Schembri says lack of appreciation should not stop police officers from solemn duties

Injured police officer Simon Schembri has said that lack of appreciation towards police work should not stop officers from performing the duties they pledged when taking office.

Schembri was critically injured when he was the victim of a hit and run accident in Luqa earlier this year. The teen accused of his attempted murder was released on bail on Friday.

Without mentioning names or referring to the court decision, Schembri wrote an open letter to fellow policemen on Facebook that police officers take an oath to be loyal to the people and Malta, and this should never chang even when help is not forthcoming or when the work is not appreciated or respected.

"These should not be moments in which one gives up. Instead, they should be an inspiration to work harder in the best interests of society.

"Never give up, just as much as I did not give up, and never forget that we are the guardians of society," he wrote.

Earlier, police union chief Sandro Camilleri expressed his disgust at the decision taken by the courts.
