ERA issues stop order on expansion of some rural roads since necessary permits not issued

The Environment and Resources Authority has issued a stop order against a contractor who was conducting road widening works on two rural roads, which the ERA say is without the necessary permits.

Following investigations by the Enforcement Directorate within the Environment and Resources Authority, it results that parts of Virtu road in Rabat and another rural road were considerably widened in the valley that used to run alongside them.

Some of these roads now have two carriageways, and the valley ended up like a trench next to the road. Due to these works, the ERA said, the natural environment was destroyed, and the natural profile of the valley and the natural water course was changed.

All these works occurred without the necessary permits from the same authority, they said.

As a result, earlier today the Authority issued a verbal stop order to the contractor - Galletta Construction Limited - and Infrastructure Malta, while a formal stop and compliance order was also issued. The Planning authority was also informed of this, the ERA said. The ERA sais that it is investigating a number of other cases regarding interventions on rural roads, including in Wied is-Sewda.
