‘Let’s work for an inclusive education that focuses on individual abilities’ – Miriam Dalli

Ensuring an inclusive education that promotes different abilities and preparing children for future careers will strengthen the education system, PL MEP Miriam Dalli has said.

Miriam Dalli was addressing a political activity in Zurrieq in preparation for the European Parliament elections, themed 'Malta, the next level'.

"I believe in a tailor-made education that addresses different needs and abilities. We have to make sure that students with different abilities are not lost between one year and another. It would be us, as a society, that would be losing out on that potential," Dalli said.

During this legislature, Dalli worked with the Autism Parents Association so that the University of Malta becomes more inclusive, allowing students with different learning abilities to continue their education at tertiary level.

Miriam Dalli, who in the past days also met with students, said that students had insisted on the need for the education system to give due attention to the social aspect. As children are spending more and more time on gadgets, a deficit was being created whereby children were lacking in social interaction skills, several students remarked.

"I also want to see an education system that continues to give greater importance to sports. I believe that this could help us address the obesity problem as well as help more people take care of their mental health," Miriam Dalli said.

Having promoted policies supporting innovation, research and development in the European Parliament, the Labour MEP said that Maltese educational institutions should prepare youths for tomorrow's industries.

"It's about the next five, 10 years. We can already see the take-up of technologies such as blockchain and AI. Preparation should not only be an academic one, but also encouraging in how to be innovative."

The activity was also addressed by Justice Minister Owen Bonnici, Parliamentary Secretary Julia Farrugia Portelli and MP Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, amongst others. Zrinzo Azzopardi announced that, based on an initiative with Miriam Dalli, proposals were being studied on how to continue combating discrimination against persons with disability in various sectors.

"There are persons finding closed doors when trying to seek certain services from financial services institutions. There are realities in the insurance sector that don't allow persons with disability to acquire certain products. We are now studying what solutions could be offered," Zrinzo Azzopardi said.

In her address, Miriam Dalli marked Freedom Day and reminded how "together with soldiers of steel, Dom Mintoff ensured a solid base for our country.  Today, 40 years later, let us continue to build on this legacy. Let us send a clear message to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat that Malta and the Labour Party need him."
