Man accused of attempting to murder neighbour using a pick-axe

Justin Joe Mula, 36 from Hamrun, today was accused of attempting to murder his neighbour Jesmond Schembri using what was said to be a pick-axe.

During the court proceedings, the defence insisted that a court expert must be appointed to check the state of the accused's psyche after seven years of constant abuse by the victim.

The defence explained that Mr Mula is currently suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder which led to the attack with a sharp pointed object.

According to a police press statement on the incident, Mr Schembri was found in a pool of blood with grievous injuries on a basement floor in Hamrun after the attack which happened at 2.15pm yesterday. The accused then went to the police station to turn himself in.

Mr Mula was also charged with causing permanent damage to the victim, as well as damaging a Rolex watch, breaching public peace, carrying a weapon without a licence, and threatening Jesmond Schembri and Benjamin Schembri.

Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona upheld the defence's request for a court expert. The defence was led by lawyer Dr Arthur Azzopardi.
