71-year-old wins Active Ageing Award for his work as president of a philanthropic society

This year's Active Ageing Award went to Joe Bartolo, who was unanimously chosen by the awards committee. In 1983, created the Għaqda Filantropika Talent Mosti, and is President till this very day, at age 71.

Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Justyne Caruana called this award a recognition for those, who despite their age, managed to make their life meaningful for themselves and for those around them. "This is not a race,  but rather is recognition for those who show courage and determination.

She said that government is committed to encouraging the elderly to work in some way or another, both for their own personal benefit, and for that of society.

"Elderly persons who remain active are more independent, and are an inspiration to their family and friends".

24 persons were nominated for the prize this year, she noted.
