The storm which battered the Maltese islands last weekend left much damage to private property, while toppling trees, water heaters and electricity poles. While no reports of any major injuries seem to have been made, some people did get hurt, and some had close encounters.
Jacqueline Debattista from Mellieha contacted The Malta Independent and told her story.
"At around 2.30am on Sunday morning, the wind blew half of my patio door's glass windowpane in. It was quite a shock. My two sons were not in Malta at the time, with one being abroad and the other in Gozo. It was impossible to find anyone to help at that time of night so I had to leave the room to the elements, and my place got ripped apart. In the morning, some neighbours helped and someone came and board up part of the glass door which was blown in. I thought I was safe, but later on Sunday morning the gusts of wind destroyed the other windowpane of her patio door," she said, adding that glass shards shot towards her face.
She was on the phone in that very room at the time.
"There was blood everywhere and it was so sharp I didn't feel it cut my face. I knocked on my neighbour's door who called 112. The ambulance arrived and they told my how lucky I was to be alive as one of the shards of glass that blew past me was huge and like a dagger. Had it gone through me..."
The ambulance crew stayed around 20 minutes to make sure I didn't have a concussion and the doctor stitched up the cuts above my eye. I have a few more cuts but they didn't need stitches."
She ended up with four stitches above her eyes.
