Labour MEP Miriam Dalli encouraged consumers to support farmers by buying local products during an event she held.
During the Q&A session whilst addressing a political activity in Rabat, she spoke of the need to attract more youths to the agricultural sector whilst noting how innovative methods were being applied to grow quality fruit and vegetable to mitigate a volatile climate and make efficient use of limited space.
Dalli said that support to farmers should come from both the government and consumers. She added that local produce was genuine and consumers stand to benefit when they know that the products they are consuming are sourced and healthy.
"We know the quality of our produce, even when compared to imported products. To continue sustaining this sector and make it lives on, we need to do more to attract young people."
Dalli remarked that supporting local produce was also needed in view of the one-size-fits-all approach that the European Union sometimes adopts in its proposals. The Labour MEP went on to call for further simplification in the process to access funds.
Another challenge was weather extremities, a result of climate change. Dalli referred to visits she made to farmers who showcased the innovative systems they were applying to mitigate some of these challenges.
