Shoppers complaining post-Christmas prices not slashed like abroad

Shoppers hunting for a good bargain in the post-Christmas sales are not happy with the discounts of 50 per cent and under being offered by some stores, when abroad the same brands are slashing up to 75 per cent off prices. Some shoppers even posted complaints on the social media pages of high-end shops, comparing the discounts offered locally with those abroad. And with a lot of stores abroad providing shipping to Malta, many are opting to shop online instead. "How come only 50 per cent? When online it is 70 per cent off, even on new stock?" one shopper wrote. The sales kicked off on Boxing Day and go on throughout the first month of the year. In the past, long queues have been reported in a number of shops in Sliema and Valletta. While shops are not obliged to offer discounts, by law sales need to be genuine and goods cannot be marketed as reduced when they are in fact being sold at the original price. Shops must also make it clear to the customers which products are being sold at reduced prices and which are not.
