A hunger strike by a group of prisoners yesterday, ended this morning as the inmates decided to have breakfast, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela said. The hunger strike began after a group of prisoners complained about poor conditions in Corradino Correctional Facility's Division 2. The complaints revolved around a lack of adequate showering and clothes washing facilities. Speaking on radio programme Għandi xi Ngħid, Mr Abela said the Director of Prisons had met with those on strike yesterday evening and works had already begun to meet some of their complaints. He added that Division 2 was one of the older parts of the prison and had needed refurbishing for several years. This, however, presented logistical problems as inmates would have to be moved out of that section while works were carried out.
