Data Commissioner rejects claim by Enemalta workers who received letter from Simon Busuttil

The Data Commissioner has rejected a complaint filed by Enemalta workers about a letter they had received from Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil, the Nationalist Party said in a statement.

Last year, Dr Busuttil had sent a letter to Enemalta workers to address them about the situation in the corporation. He had dealt with the corporation's privatisation, the sale of the BWSC plant and the lack of transparency the government was showing in contracts it had signed. Eleven Enemalta workers had lodged a complaint with the Data Commissioner, claiming violation of the Data Protection Act,

In his decision, the Data Commissioner concluded that Dr Busuttil had every right to send such a letter as it had been sent with the intention to inform the workers of the situation in the energy sector. The constitutional role of the Opposition Leader cannot be hampered in a democratic society.

There was no breach of privacy when the letter was sent, the commissioner concluded.
