Two teenagers were today granted bail after pleading not guilty to robbing cigarette vending machines and a cash register.
One of the accused is a 16-year-old from Attard while the other is 18, from Gudja. Their names cannot be published by order of the court.
Both are accused of robbing and damaging three vending machines as well as a cash register at kiosks and shops in Blata l-Bajda, Msida, Gudja and Floriana. The 18-year-old alone is charged with robbing a vending machine in Sliema while the 16-year-old is charged with robbing a vending machine in Gudja and breaching bail conditions.
The alleged incidents took place between 16 and 18 January. According to the charges, some of the vending machines contained more than €2,300 in cash.
Inspectors Daryl Borg and James Grech, prosecuting, objected to the request for bail, insisting that there were several witnesses that would be testifying. Defence Lawyers Veronique Dalli and Dean Hili requested bail, arguing that the crimes were not serious. They also noted that the police allegedly had fingerprints and CCTV footage of the acts and, as such, there was no risk that the accused could tamper with evidence. Dr Dalli also noted that in the initial statement both teenagers had admitted to two of the charges.
Magistrate Charmaine Galea granted bail to the two young men against a personal guarantee of €300 and a deposit of €1,000 each. She warned them not to speak to any witnesses or approach the shops where the alleged thefts took place. The Magistrate also had some of advice for the accused; "Be careful of the decisions you make. You are far too young to ruin your lives."
