Eleven members of a stag party were arrested on board a Ryanair flight from Malta to Edinburgh after police with sniffer dogs were called to investigate the 'rowdy' group, British media report.
Other passengers were stuck in the airport after police and sniffer dogs boarded the plane that had arrived from Edinburgh that day.
It is believed Ryanair crew alerted the authorities to the on board behaviour, which saw the stag party escorted off the plane before 11 were arrested.
One witness said: "Unfortunately our inbound flight has seemingly several drunken passengers heading to a 'rave' in Malta this weekend. Police and police dogs were on the plane, however Ryanair are giving us no information except to say flight is delayed due to security checks."
Due to the delay, and restrictions in the hours a pilot and crew can spend in the air, they were unable to make the four-hour flight back to Edinburgh.
Ryanair had to get another entire crew to staff the flight back to Scotland - resulting in the delay, the British media report.
A spokeswoman for Ryanair said: "The crew of this flight from Edinburgh to Malta (31 Mar) requested police assistance upon arrival after a number of passengers became disruptive in-flight.
"The aircraft landed normally and police removed and detained these individuals at Malta Airport. As a result, the return flight departed to Edinburgh with a delay of two hours.
"We sincerely apologise to affected customers, but we will not tolerate unruly or disruptive behaviour at any time and the safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our number one priority. This is now a matter for local police."
