The government has announced that as from tomorrow, Kordin Road will start to be known as Dom Mintoff Road.
The change comes in the year when the country will be commemorating the 100th year of the former prime minister's birth.
In a statement, the government said that the choice of this road was made for several reasons, the first of which is that this particular stretch is reachable from Pawlu Boff Avenue. Pawlu Boffa was Mr Mintoff's predecessor as Labour Party leader.
This road also leads to 28 April 1958 Road in Paola, the date which is considered to be the first step towards the country's freedom in 1979.
The road also includes two schools that were built in the 1950s when Mr Mintoff was Prime Minister, and also hosts a church and a mosque which, the government said, symbolise the two predominant cultures in the Mediterranean. What is today known as Gaddafi Gardens will now be known as Mediterranean Gardens.
Freedom Square was "lost" when the new Parliament building was built, but the government said that the Freedom Square will now be the area incorporating the open space as soon as the Spanish Steps end until the first corner of Republic Street where it crosses Ordnance Street, and the road in between the Parliament building and the theatre.
