40 people in court over insurance fraud

A group of around 40 people are appearing in court in connection with a massive case of insurance fraud involving what are known as "staged accidents". The case was uncovered by a group of insurance agencies who smelt a rat when they realised that claims were being filed by the same people. In some case, one person was claiming traffic accidents involving several of his own cars. The case is being heard by Magistrate Aaron Bugeja. Sources said it was the insurance agencies that investigated the claims and uncovered a racket, whereby in some cases, people were agreeing to be involved in a traffic accident and would then file separate claims with their own insurance agencies. The agencies compiled all the evidence they could and went to the police with their findings. More details to follow as the case is currently ongoing.
