Simon Busuttil insists he does not own trust or companies abroad

Leader of the Opposition Simon Busuttil has rebutted media reports claiming that he himself is involved in trust funds and a company abroad.

Speaking to The Malta Independent on Sunday, a party spokesperson said that the article which appeared in l-Orizzont, tried to paper over the misconduct of Minister Konrad Mizzi by comparing it to "a completely different situation".

Dr Busuttil said that, as presented in his declaration of assets, he does not own a trust fund or a company registered abroad.

"The firm, of which I was part until 2010, is dissolved today. It used to offer legal services regarding trusts, just like other firms operating in Malta. As is already known, I stopped my legal services in 2010 and I resigned from the company before I was elected leader of the Nationalist Party."

He said that for him, having a Minister who forms a company in Panama, a tax haven known for dirty money and tax evasion, is unacceptable.

Dr Busuttil said that the matter is even more serious knowing that this is the same Minister responsible for the biggest project in the country.

"This behaviour is unacceptable. This is not what the people of Malta deserve, nor is it what the people voted for. But for Joseph Muscat, everything goes."
