Nearly nine of every 10 Maltese people feel pets should be treated better by their owners, a recent study has found. A survey conducted by the European Commission on people's beliefs and attitudes towards animal welfare, found that 87 per cent of Maltese felt "companion" animals should enjoy better welfare. The EU average was 74 per cent. The Maltese were the second most likely to feel this way, with Cypriots only slightly more concerned for their pets' well-being. The publication of the findings coincided with the reuniting of a pet pharaoh hound with his owner after the dog had gone missing and was painted green by "vandals celebrating St Patrick's Day". Looking skinny and terrified, the painted dog was found roaming the streets of Attard by animal welfare volunteers earlier this week. Asked what they understood by the term 'animal welfare', two-thirds of Maltese respondents said it was "the duty of all people to respect all animals". Only two per cent felt ensuring animal welfare was not important, among the lowest across all member states.
