Off-roading laws need to be enfoced to protect Mellieħa, says mayor

Enforcement needs to be stepped up at the protected Wied il-Miżieb area to cut down on off-roading, according to Mellieħa mayor John Buttigieg, following claims that motorcyclists were often engaged in the illegal practice there. The council also regularly received reports on similar practices in Selmun, mainly the areas known as il-Blata and Mgiebaħ, but putting up signs to discourage the illegal activity was futile, as these were often vandalised, the mayor said. "Where this problem occurs we erect various signs that indicate that off-roading is prohibited, but unfortunately these are either stolen or vandalised within days, if not hours." The Wied il-Miżieb area has been protected as a Nature Reserve since 2001, as it houses the largest population of the endangered Sandarac Gum Tree, Malta's National Tree, which risks being damaged by the off-roading. The plateau is also a Natura 2000 site and a Special Area of Conservation of International Importance while Mepa declared the site a Tree Protected Area in 2011.
