MEP Miriam Dalli called for policies that seriously address the migration problem in a way that this crisis will be managed properly by all European countries. Dr Dalli said that at the moment, European migration policies are not working.
"Instead of addressing the migration challenge at its core, the European Union is ending up beating around the bush with policies that address only the consequences," Miriam Dalli said.
During the European Parliament's debate on the refugee and migration situation in Europe, Miriam Dalli emphasised that this is an issue that goes beyond European borders requiring the united action of various international countries.
She continued saying that the challenge that the EU is facing are undermining European borders and European laws that were never drafted for the kind of crisis that the EU is facing today. Miriam Dalli emphasised that this is amply clear in the case of the Schengen Agreement and the Dublin Regulation which restricts asylum applications to the first country of entry.
Dr Dalli emphasised that serious policies that manage properly the immigration issue are required, "the EU's proposed relocation scheme is not working as yet and the biggest burden is being carried by the countries that are at the forefront of our borders."
She added that, "it is useless to point fingers at one country. The reality is that countries on the EU's borders cannot be left fending on their own without any support."
Miriam Dalli stated that if the European Union is not going to address seriously this matter it will simply continue tip-toeing around the problem and we will end up with a greater problem on our hands.
